Abstract
The study investigated the relationship between teachers’ characteristics and academic performance of students with hearing impairment. Five research hypotheses were raised to guide the study. The study adopted survey design. All students with hearing impairment in special education centre, Ibom Layout Calabar constituted the study population were twenty (20) students with hearing impairment were selected, using purposive and incidental techniques. Data were analysed using simple regression. Findings of the study revealed that teachers knowledge of subject matter significantly relate with academic performance of student with hearing impairment. Teaching method does not relate with academic performance of students with hearing impairment. Teacher’s communication skills does not relate with academic performance of students with hearing impairment. Teaching experience significantly relate with academic performance of students with hearing impairment. Teachers’ characteristics generally relate significantly with academic performance of students with hearing impaired. It is therefore recommended that government should be objective in the teachers’ employment process by focusing on the Necessary in-service training should always be given to the serving teachers to help develop in them the required quality that will enhance effective teaching delivery to students with hearing impairment.
