Abstract

The current geopolitical landscape has inspired a resurgence of activism on issues of sustainability. We seek to re-evaluate the impact of our actions and inaction on the society, the economy and the world at large. Sustainability, as a concept which has evolved over time, has inspired different approaches to achieving its core aim: that resources should be efficiently managed for the benefit of both present and future generations.

This essay tackles the issue of how preconceived notions of growth as a measurement of a healthy economy have adversely impacted the vision for sustainability. It also challenges the conventional strategy for attaining sustainability through promoting economic growth, revealing it as unrealistic and impractical in the long run. By analysing the interplay between economic and demographic growth, it highlights their limitations as viable aspirations for posterity.

Finally it advocates for a profound shift in mind-set towards designing regenerative and distributive systems to achieve the balance that we desperately need to not just grow but survive on this extraordinary but delicate planet.
