Abstract

This paper presents the development of a low-cost cardiac care management system for home patient care, involving ECG acquisition, transmission, and timely medical intervention. ECG is a very critical parameter, used for the detection of cardiovascular diseases and thus, it should be measured very carefully. Therefore, the proposed work develops an IoT based remote cardiac care management system to enable early detection and medical intervention in case of cardiovascular abnormalities in home patients. In the proposed system, ECG is acquired using a 3-lead acquisition module and the acquired ECG is sent to the mobile phone via Bluetooth. An Android application has been developed to transmit ECG signal data to the cloud server. The medical database created on the cloud server contains personal information, medical history report and ECG data of the registered patients. The registered doctor gets the alert when new ECG data is uploaded on the cloud. The Doctor analyzes the ECG and shares his diagnostic assessment and consequent prescription with the patient, over the same android application in the form of text. Therefore, the proposed remote cardiac care management system not only allows early diagnosis and intervention in case of heart-related abnormalities, but it also reduces the frequent visits of the patients to the hospitals. The proposed work has been implemented using: AD8232 (ECG acquisition board), Arduino UNO (Microcontroller) and HC-05 (Bluetooth transceiver). The Android Application for the ECG acquisition and transmission has been developed with the help of MIT App Inventor: an open source web application for Android provided by Google. The result demonstrates the successful working of the overall remote cardiac management platform.
