Abstract
In recent years, the world has witnessed new waves of violent extremism that have taken the lives of many innocent people. Whether based on religious, ethnic or political grounds, extremist ideologies glorify the supremacy of a particular group, and oppose a more tolerant and inclusive society. This poses two distinct but related challenges for contemporary societies: the rise of violent extremism and its spread across national borders and the governance of increasingly diverse and multi-cultural societies. While violent extremism requires interventions to protect the security of people and assets, prevention of violent extremism needs to look beyond strict security concerns to development-related causes of and solutions to the phenomenon. Experiences in both development and peacebuilding show that an increase in the levels of inclusion and tolerance in communities can lead to both better governance of diversity, and to societies better inoculated against violent extremism. Tolerance for diversity and intercultural understanding are also at the heart of the new 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, and particularly Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16, on building peaceful, just and inclusive societies. This internship paper presented by Rehema Zaid Obuyi student number 17s03dpcs001 and a Programs Coordinator at Integrated Initiatives for Community Empowerment (IICEP) to Africa Nazarene University for Bachelor of Arts in Peace and Conflict Studies. IICEP is an NGO in Kenya which focuses on Prevention of Violent Extremism at grassroot level. She will highlight about her work at IICEP, and how the skills she acquired in her Bachelor of Arts in Peace and Conflict Studies has helped her to be more effective and efficient in her work in Peace Building. Towards making the world a better and safer place for all. Africa Nazarene University offers a-well rounded holistic education to help students establish themselves in the university core values. Character to help one explore his faith for living. Competence-to help one achieve his goals for his career and Community to help one find his place in the world. This is also a phase where the world is facing a global pandemic the student will highlight some of the lessons and experiences from COVID 19.
