Investigation on the Sacrifice of Medical Workers Under COVID-19

Background: The epidemiological and clinical characteristics of patients with COVID-19 have been reported, but relevant research on the death of medical workers was still unknown.
Methods: In this retrospective study, we included demographic information from official and public reports form January 21, 2020 to April 6, 2020 for medical workers who gave their lives for epidemic prevention and control in China.
Findings: As of April 6, at least 64 medical workers in China have given their lives for the prevention and control of COVID-19, including 51 males and 13 females. The age of death was mainly concentrated in the age of 41-60 years old (48.40±12.84 years). February is the peak of sacrifice for Chinese medical workers, and the peak time of death is about a week after the highest number of daily new cases. In addition, 24 (38.7%) of medical workers died of COVID-19, while nearly half of medical workers died of overwork.
Interpretation: While fighting against COVID-19, it is necessary to reduce the burden of medical workers and reduce the probability of infection.
