Abstract

In 2009, the American Bar Association conducted an intensive, year-long study of diversity in the legal profession in an attempt to ascertain the next steps for the Association and the profession to achieve the goals of elimination of bias and enhancement of diversity. This article reviews the fact-finding process that led up to the 2009 ABA Presidential Summit on Diversity in the Legal Profession, identifies the key themes that emerged, and summarizes the key points made that most directly affect the judiciary. Over the coming year, ABA President Carolyn Lamm has pledged to follow up on the past year's work and develop a more specific prioritized road map for the Association and the profession in their quest for diversity.
