Abstract

Social norms are regarded one of the constraints in the exchange process in the economy. The present article discusses the role of social norms in economic development, basically the economy of India and Assam. Considering the two models of social norms discussed by Vijay Jagannathan and Barbara Harriss, it has been argued that there are some differences in the economy of India and Assam regarding the role of social norms. It is difficult to violate social norms of a particular society for the purpose of economic development, because these have historical and cultural values attached with the social life of the people of the respective society. The social norms that have been adversely affecting on economic development need to be polished such a way that balance can be attained between social norms and economic development.
