Abstract

The Contract and Commercial Law Reform Committee was responsible for what became the New Zealand contract statutes. This body of legislation is much more comprehensive than that found in similar jurisdictions. Yet surprisingly little attention has been paid to the mechanics of the law reform process. The workings of the Committee merit attention not only for what they show in their own terms but for what they tell us about the nature of law reform in the second half of the twentieth century in New Zealand. Whilst many of the key participants are no longer alive, fortunately many of the papers of the Committee consisting of minutes, letters and memos can be found in Archives New Zealand and can be used to supplement the reports that the Committee produced. These sources help to provide a rich and more nuanced picture of the reform process.
