Abstract

This Article analyzes shortcomings in ethical codes governing international human rights lawyers and proposes an alternate regime. International human rights lawyers face unique challenges related to client identity, victimhood narratives, and varying cultural practices. Existing jurisdictional codes, institutional guidelines, and rules of special tribunals inadequately address such challenges. More broadly, solutions in the literature fail to sufficiently address problems related to client identity and competing cultural norms. This Article presents a regime that builds on existing codes and develops minimum standards for international human rights lawyers.
