Abstract
India continues to be one of the greatest wonders in the world owing to its diversity in cultures, faiths, languages, ethnicities, etc. Christianity originated in India with the preaching of Saint Thomas, one of the apostles of Jesus. One of the oldest Christian communities in the world, the Saint Thomas Christians or Mar Toma Nazranis, hail from India. After the arrival of the Portuguese, the indigenous Christians in India had undergone drastic transformations in the fields of practices, administrative structures and living styes. There was a huge outcry among the many in India and abroad regarding the reestablishing of the lost heritage. A pioneer among them was Fr. Placid CMI. Fr. Placid submitted a memorandum to the Eugene Cardinal Tisserant was the Secretary of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches, on November 26, 1953, at the Bishop’s House, Thiruvalla. This seven-point memorandum was prophetic and monumental as the Vatican II convened within a decade stands as the greatest testimony for the communio-ecclesiology presented in it. Further, several of the visible changes in the Syro Malabar Church came in the aftermath of the submission of the memorandum. This work is a presentation of vision in the memorandum and its impact after Vatican II.
