Abstract
The Special Court for Sierra Leone (SCSL) is the first independent, hybrid or 'nationalized' international criminal tribunal and also the first to be located in the same country as the theater of conflict. As such, it has an unusual opportunity to leave a lasting legacy for the people of Sierra Leone. This article, from two insiders, examines the SCSL’s foray into this hitherto uncharted area and the significance of its early steps for other ad hoc and permanent international criminal tribunals.
