Abstract

Marlee Kline's lasting professional legacy will almost certainly be her work on First Nations women and the role played by* the state in mediating and, more often, interfering with their relationships with their children. Yet a lesser-known, though just as important, aspect of her work was her unsettling foray into the issue of anti-Semitism. Marlee courageously took on this issue following the discovery of profoundly anti-Semitic sentiments by one of Canada's most famous 'first women to'- Clara Brett Martin. This commentary is based on a speech given at the Roundtable in Memory of Marlee Kline at the second International Conference on Gender, Sexuality and Law at Keele University on 29 June 2002 and forms part of a special issue of the Canadian Journal of Women and the Law dedicated to her memory.
