Abstract
Today we live in a period of flux between a system of sovereign states and institutions that would circumscribe state sovereignty, much like the period of early modern Europe. Both then and today, religion is one of the chief forces that is challenging sovereignty. In this atmosphere, religious freedom becomes a difficult and contested issue -- but nevertheless a value worth upholding, the article argues.
