Abstract

In the period between the late 1890's and the early 1920's there was a close relationship between Phonologists, the predecessors to Linguists and the authors of teacher's manuals and student primers. Reading instruction was not considered a problem. Nellie Dale was a teacher in London and also a prominent author whose books were widely used in both the UK and in the U. S. Her works and the school scene in London at the time are sketched.
