Abstract

This article is an edited text of two presentations given at the Sixteenth Annual Whittier Health Law Symposium on April 18, 1997. In the first part of the article, Dr. Spencer Koerner, a Consultant for Telemedicine & International Health at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, details the state of the art in telemedicine practices, defined as “the use of telecommunication technology to deliver medical services.” Dr. Koerner discusses the history of the development of telemedicine, as well as its current and potential future uses. Professor Daar follows in the second part of the article, discussing legal aspects of the delivery of medical services remotely. Specifically, Professor Daar focuses on three distinct legal considerations: licensure barriers, interstate medical malpractice liability, and patient informed consent.
