Abstract

Retiree health benefits have been in the news recently, as a result of the promulgation of new accounting standards for governmental employers, the travails of the automakers, and concerns as to the sustainability of retiree health benefits. This article discusses the history and recent decline of employer-provided retiree health benefits and the cost, funding and accounting issues associated with their maintenance. Finally, the article describes the legal issues relating to termination or modification of retiree benefits and the relationship between retiree health benefits and retirement decisions by workers.
