Abstract
This essay, the introductory chapter to a widely-used practice-oriented guide to international human rights law, discusses: (1) the nature of the international human rights movement and international human rights law; (2) the history of the emergence of the concept of international human rights and of the development of international rights law; (3) the content of international human rights law; (4) who is bound by international human rights law; (5) how international human rights law can be enforced; and (6) the problems and prospects for human rights law, including a list of efforts that might usefully be taken to increase respect for human rights for people throughout the world.
