Abstract

The lectures on the economic growth are omitted in the basic course of the macroeconomics. These issues are regarded as too difficult for the beginner student, mainly on account of the need to apply dynamic tools of analysis. The economic growth is introduced at the stage of intermediate course of macroeconomics. However, it is usually limited to the very basic presentation of the traditional Solow model with the exogenous technological progress. In this paper, I would like to suggest the structure of the lecture on the economic growth which provides extension of this problem by three issues. First and foremost, differential calculus should be used more widely. This, in consequence, will constitute solid bases for further studying of the advanced macroeconomics which widely uses formal tools of analysis. Furthermore, I propose settling the growth models in the historical perspective in a wider manner in order to emphasize the uniqueness of the phenomenon of the growth in the development of the mankind. Finally, the extension of the lecture should include models of the endogenous growth which are basic tools of the description of economic dynamics at present. Therefore, the basic structure of the lecture could consist of three elements: history of the economic growth, model of the capital accumulation (Solow model) as well as model of the knowledge production.
