Personality Trait, Social Interaction and Mobile Phone Usage Dependence

Abstract
The dependence on mobile phone or even "no mobile and no life" has gradually become a prevalent phenomenon. The present study explores the influential factors of mobile phone dependence by considering the model associated with personality traits and social interactions. Personality traits include perfectionism, extroversion, lack of self-esteem, neuroticism, novelty seeking and boredom proneness, and social interactions include social capital and social escape. Structure equation modeling (SEM) is used to test the hypothesized relationships in the research model. The results reveal that social interactions and personality traits do play an important role on mobile phone dependence. In terms of the total effects of measures, the constructs of novelty seeking, perfectionism, social escape, and social capital have strong impacts on mobile phone dependence. It is also found that neuroticism and lack of esteem are positively related to social escape and extroversion and novelty seeking are positively related to social capital. Finally, the suggestions to avoid mobile phone dependence are drawn from the results of this study.
