Abstract

The Spanish law governing burial insurance designs it as an insurance-in-kind, under which insurance companies guarantee to provide the funeral services required at the time of death of the insured. However, the regulation of burial insurance has some shortcomings that adversely affect the rights of the insured and which hinder the development of effective competition in the burial insurance market and in the market for funeral services. In the present study we identify key gaps in the regulation of this institutions and also its impact on policyholders and competition.
