Abstract

Ibn Majah is one of the leading Muhaddithin. His Sunan has gained world wide popularity for its peculiarities. Hafiz Ibn Hajar has paid tribute to his work with the words 'کتابہ فی السنن جامع جید' His book in which he has collected the practices of the Messenger of Allah (Peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is a nice collection. [See Tahdhib al-Tahdhib, Vol 9, p.31]. An other peculiarity of his work on Hadith collection is his mention of the area to which the transmitter belonged. For example, concerning the Hadith Kullu Muskirin Haramun (Every intoxicant is unlawful) he says: ھذا حدیث المصریین [This is a hath of the Egyptians]. Regarding an other chain he says: ھذا حدیث العراقیۃ This is a hadith of the Iraqians. Another distinction of Sunan Ibn Majah is that there are five such ahadith who are of the highest quality having only three intervening transmitters in between Ibn Majah and the Messenger of Allah (Peacer and blessing of Allah be upon him.All these five transmissions are with the same chain. As comparfed to it in Sunan Abi Da'ud and Sunan al-Tirmidhi there is only one transmission each which is Thulathi in character.The chains are different. There is not a single Thulathi Hadith in Sahih Muslim and Sunan Nasa'i. However in the Sahih Bukhari there are 22 Ahadith which are thulathi Ahadith. The chain of Thulathiyat existing in Sunan Ibn Majah has been objected by the critics concerning one of the transmitters whose name is 'Kathir bin Salim'. Musnad Darimi contains the Thulathi Ahadith more than other compilations of his time. Ibn Khlakan has considered it as one of the Six Authentic books of Ahadith
