Abstract

Through the Landfill Directive, the European Union has imposed targets on member states to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by reducing landfill waste. This paper will focus specifically on attempts to increase household recycling through the waste collection services. In the UK, there has been a debate within local and central government as to whether it is enough to rely on education and social responsibility or whether it is appropriate to reward recyclers. Using a reading of Hegel and an analysis of government reports, council data and user-generated content, the paper will argue that incentives are consistent with a sustainable system.
