Abstract
I will argue that a government mandated standard of weak encryption is not justified — security arguments are not forceful enough to override individual privacy rights. In fact, security arguments actually cut the other direction. It is only through the use of strong encryption that we can obtain an appropriate level of security against industrial espionage, unwarranted invasions into private domains, and information warfare or terrorism.
