Abstract

Leadership requirements are constantly increasing as people are facing several difficulties in their professional, personal, business, political and religious aspects of life. Critical needs of the society needs immediate attention of leadership development (Bennis & Goldsmith, 2003). Under such circumstances women have come to the front and taken up several leadership roles that address the requirements of the society. Today, women manage complex and multiple roles to fulfill their responsibilities and play a critical role in the development of any organization. Initially, the role of women as traditional home-makers went unrecognized as the society failed to note the degree of leadership that was required to handle family matters (Watson, 2000). However, today women have come out of their traditional garb and make important decisions in leading companies to bring about change. As Isabel Myers-Briggs (1985) stated, leadership style varies from one person to another depending on their chosen fields, differing attributes and preferences. For women, it is their capacity to influence that makes them wonderful leaders. However, women leadership do face several challenges that are addressed in the following sections followed by leadership training initiatives that can be taken to challenge the impediments that restrict women leadership development. This paper illustrates why despite years of progress, women still remain a miniscule percentage of the overall workforce in America.
