Abstract
In this paper the merits of speaking the truth and demerits of speaking a lie have been explained in the light of the Holy Qur'an and the Sunnah. The paper tells that the cause of all disorder and mischief is mainly the telling of lie and concealing of the truth. The soul of Islamic culture is truthfulness in all affairs of life. Much stress has been given on conviction and good action and speaking the truth and observing patience. A full chapter in the Holy Qur'an called Sura al-`Asr (Chapter 103 of the Holy Qur'an) has been devoted on this point. It reads as under:
By (the Token of) time (through the ages), Verily man is In loss, Except such As have Faith, and do righteous deeds, and (join together) In the mutual teaching of truth, and of patience and constancy. [Al-Qur'an, 103 : 1 to 3]
Similarly, at another place the Holy Qur'an says:
Whatever is In the heavens and on earth, let it declare the praises and glory of Allah. for He is the Exalted In Might, the wise. O ye who believe! why say ye that which ye do not? Grievously odious is it In the sight of Allah that ye say that which ye do not. [Al-Qur'an, 61: 1 to 3]
To tell a lie has been condemned in the following words:
such (Is the Pilgrimage): Whoever honours the sacred rites of Allah, for Him it is good In the sight of His Lord. lawful to you (for food In Pilgrimage) are cattle, except those mentioned to you (as exception): but shun the abomination of idols, and shun the word that is false,- [Al-Qur'an, 22:30]
There is also a saying of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that a person who defrauds or cheats is not from among us.
