Abstract

In 2003, the Earl Carl Institute launched research programs to advocate for the reduction of recidivism through enhanced educational programs for prison inmates. The Institute’s focus continues to be the enhancement of the quality of life for all Americans and not solely for the provision of services to prison inmates. However, our research of 2003 and current updates strongly support redirecting some of the large sums of money that has been poured into imprisoning Americans toward educating them. Our research shows that educating prisoners is a prudent use of funds, as it will help deter persons from repeating criminal offenses that lead to recidivism. We anticipate following this updated report with a report that addresses various methods of financing prisoner education.
