Developing Our Students and Strengthening Our Program at UCSB

Abstract
In this presentation, we cover key features of our graduate program at UCSB such as faculty advising, peer mentoring, student reviews, fellowship/other financial support, and professional skills development (professional skills forums, TA training, and public presentations). We refrain from discussing major degree requirements due to time constraints. Nevertheless, we wish to provide information on certain features of our program such as the field paper option, PhD emphases, and the language skills requirement, which underscore the importance of interdisciplinarity and flexibility in our training and advising of graduate students. One purpose of this presentation and discussion is to identify new challenges and best practices that may help our program better prepare for the increasing diversity among our undergraduate students. Furthermore, we aim to leverage the strength of increased campus diversity in a leading public institution of higher education to help maintain and further the goal of excellence in graduate training and mentoring.
