Abstract
Spanish Abstract: Las instituciones son fundamentales para explicar las diferentes trayectorias de desarrollo de los países y las regiones. Un marco institucional más equitativo da mejores incentivos y aumenta el desempeño económico en el largo plazo. Este artículo analiza el efecto de los arreglos institucionales en la estructura de la propiedad de la tierra del siglo XIX y, a través suyo, sobre el éxito regional de la actividad cafetera en el siglo XX.
English Abstract: Institutions play a fundamental role in explaining different development paths of countries and regions. More equitable institutions provide better incentives and enhance overall long term performance. This paper analyses the effect of the institutional arrangements in the structure or land property rights from the nineteenth century, and through it, the success of regional coffee production in the twentieth century.
