Abstract

The total number of villages in India has increased from 6,38,588 (2001 census) to 6,40,867 (2011 census); However the ratio of increase in rural to urban population is 4:16, which is mainly due to the migration of rural population to urban areas in search of jobs for their livelihood and also in pursuit of better quality of life. There are about 833 million people who reside in villages which constitute more than 2/3rd of the total population of India of which nearly 216 million are Below Poverty line. The Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD) has introduced various schemes and programmes to ensure employment opportunities, social security, infrastructure development and other facilities to the rural people. Even the planning commission of India had various provisions for rural development in its earlier plans as well as in its eleventh and twelfth five year plans. Some of the measures include- extension of employment opportunities, skill enhancement programmes for rural youth, financial inclusion measures, infrastructure development programmes, asset creation and social security measures. This paper analyzes the outcomes of developmental initiatives on Human Developmental parameters like literacy rate, birth rate, death rate, infant mortality rate, sex ratio, number of residents in rural areas and the number of people below poverty line. An effort is also made to outline the implications of changing rural demographic trends on rural transformation in India.
