Abstract

I review Jo Guldi and David Armitage's The History Manifesto. I argue that the author's call for historians to return to the studying the longue-durée is indeed important. Nevertheless, I show that the History Manifesto does not succeed in making a persuasive case for privileging the role of historians in studying the longue-durée. It is a deeply flawed book that mischaracterizes numerous debates in economic history and other social sciences.
