Abstract

The article focused on cost effectiveness of HIV/AIDS prevention strategies in Nigeria. It was designed as a case study. Data were sourced from the Anambra State Agency for HIV/AIDS prevention in Awka and the centres for HIV/AIDS prevention established by NGOs in 2 Awka, Onitsha, and Nnewi. Data were analyzed with Power and Eisenberg’s CER and the X2. Results indicate that: (i) Public and private spending on HIV/AIDS prevention in Nigeria had positive impact on HIV/AIDS control, (2) Counselling and condom distribution were more cost effective than the other strategies, (3) Health effects of counselling and STD treatment were not gender dependent while others were gender biased, (4) Counselling was most effective within the age range 36-56 years, social media within the age range 56 years – above while condom distribution was most effective within the age range 15-35 years. On the basis of the above – stated findings, it was recommended, inter alia, that public health authorities should allocate more funds to counseling and condom distribution.
