Assessing Opposite Parties’ Behavior Towards Consumer Disputes Redressal Mechanism Under Consumer Protection Act

Abstract
The present study analyzes the attitude and perception of opposite parties towards consumer grievances redressal under Consumer Protection Act in Haryana. Examining viewpoints of opposite parties provided new insights into the subject. The unit of sample for this objective was individual defendants against whom the complaints have been filed at consumer forums by consumers. The sample size was 50 respondents. Convenience cum purposive sampling techniques was adopted for selecting respondents. A structured questionnaire was used for collecting primary data. Various statistical tools and techniques viz. average, ratio, standard deviation, Pearson Chi Square test, one sample t-test, Karl Pearson Co-efficient of Correlation and Chi Square Goodness of Fit Test used to analyze the data. It was concluded that defendants were not fully aware about the provision of Act and were divided in their opinion about that procedure adopted for settling complaints at consumer forums. They justified it as advocates can represent the cases in more efficient and effective manner. They were found satisfied with the procedure adopted for settling complaints at consumer forums & favoured the establishment of the consumer forums at sub divisional level. The study has implications for lawmakers to enhance the effectiveness of this Act in the country.
