Abstract

The paper deals with the appearance in the Sherlock Holmes Canon of places in the Charing Cross neighbourhood. Among the real-life places discussed are: Charing Cross Station; the American Exchange; the Lowther Arcade; Charing Cross Hospital; Charing Cross Post (and Telegraph) Office; Charing Cross Turkish Baths; and seven hotels, the Charing Cross, the Grand, Morley's, the Victoria, the Metropole, the Golden Cross and the Cecil. Included also are drawings or photographs or both of a number of the places discussed.

Note: The paper is illustrated by a map, three topographical drawings, five photographs and five illustrations that originally accompanied adventures in the Canon.
