Abstract

Testimony in criminal proceedings is inherently stressful; that stress can impede a witness’ ability to reliably recount a difficult event to a judge or jury. By being present during witness preparation meetings and, more importantly, during witness testimony, an accredited support dog can assist vulnerable victims and witnesses in providing a full and candid account of their evidence in a calm and concise manner. The presence of the support dog can assist the prosecution in putting forward the best evidence and likewise assist the trier of fact in reaching a just verdict.
