Abstract
This essay is a footnoted and lightly edited version of oral remarks presented at the Saint Louis University School of Law in response to the 2015 Childress Lecture delivered by Lawrence Sager, titled "Religious Freedom, Social Justice and Public Policy." Developed in response to Sager's remarks, the essay focuses on Sager's claims regarding the history and propriety of religious exemptions.
