Abstract
The paper examines various indicators of son preference and daughter discrimination over time and across different communities in Canada. By doing so it problematizes cultural explanations that imply sex selection is a new/recent phenomenon in Canada brought from non-Western countries. It allows us to identify ways gender relations shifted among these groups. This could better inform how race, socio-economic variables and migration affect gender dynamics in the current prevalence of sex selection, and other forms of gender discrimination in general and gender-based violence in particular across various spheres in Canada.
