Abstract

The practice of collection of capitation fee has ushered in an era where education is viewed as a new lucrative industry. The problem basically stems from the inadequacy of suitable educational facilities in the country. A purely economic solution to this would be to increase the number of educational institutions to keep pace with the increasing demand. Economist, Swaminathan Ankleshwar Aiyer claimed that in such a situation, the market itself would be best able to regulate the quality of education in private institutions. However, this has not proved to be correct. Over the last decade, there has been a mushrooming of private institutions collecting exorbitant amounts as capitation fee in consideration for sub-standard educational facilities.
