The Role of Education in the Development of Cooperative Organisations in Nigeria

Abstract
Education is desirable for all mankind, and it is one of life's necessities for every organization and society in general. The importance of education in cooperative organization has been highlighted by many scholars especially in developed countries but in Nigeria many people do not know much about cooperative organisations. The members are not really familiar with its mechanism and role in economic development. When members of a cooperative organization are not fully indoctrinated in both general and specific knowledge, they pose serious threats to the cooperative movement and this is the motivation to study the role of education in achieving successful cooperative organizations in Nigeria. The method applied for this paper is the narrative textual case study (NTCS) that helped the researchers obtain information from several sources. This paper identified some inadequacies and malfunctions of most cooperative organizations in Nigeria and on this basis recommends the need for adequately trained staff and provision of educational facilities for members of cooperative organisations. It is through the strengthening of education in cooperative movement that the cooperative organizations in Nigeria will attain their objective, mission, and vision.
