Abstract

This paper looks at the way the Department of Homeland Security was established, highlighting that the chaotic and politicised manner in which policymakers had approached the initiative had sown many of the department's problems. The paper argues that if Australia wants to make the Department of Home Affairs a success, it must look at the American case and ensure that the new department avoids politicisation and has a specific definition as to what it is meant to protect.
