Adaptation of Programs in Regional Television Channels: An Analytical Review Among Kannada Television Channels

Abstract
A majority of reality shows telecasting on Indian television channels are undeniably an adaptation of programs aired on western television. However, the producers among the national General Entertainment Channels (GEC’s) have Indianized the familiarity of the content to connect with the audience. Convergence of national television channels with the regional market including Kannada, have followed the footsteps of its mother channel in catering content. The presenting format of programs, however, seem to be no different, regional producers conceptualize to connect with audience of regional nativity. The study reviews the characters, characterization adapted in the tele-serials and television programs and other aspects of creating the content. The methodology applied here is analytical and had challenges in getting the research materials in this area of research. The study qualitatively analyses the adaptation of program content and presentation to understand the business strategy enabling them earn Television Rating Points (TRP). However, the study concludes with the discussion and recommendation of producing new story formats which are original in Kannada language than relying on the adaptation of stories which are of different nativity.
