Abstract
Brazil imprisons thousands, but a small percent of fortunate people are imprisoned in APAC (Association for the Protection of the Condemned) prisons, where they are treated with respect and trust. This article describes the work of volunteers from a Catholic church community association that helps administer the prisons in collaboration with the “recouperandos” (“people in the process of recuperating” a.k.a. inmates). Select recouperandos have the keys to the cells and prison. No governmental or other correctional officers work at the APAC prisons. Walker, who spent two days, including a night at a men’s APAC prison, and Andrew Johnson, a Ph.D. student who spent several weeks at an APAC prison, and Katherine van Wormer, describe this remarkable restorative prison that has significantly low recidivism rates.
