Abstract
Educational attainments of students in various programmes are affected by many internal and external factors. External factors can include the institutional support mechanism, parental support, infrastructure facilities available and its accessibility, situatedness of academic institutions and other economic variables. This research is conducted to understand the impact of institutional support mechanism and parental support on the educational achievements of students in different categories. Primary data was collected from 307 students between the age group of 15-25 pursuing various programmes in schools and colleges. The results of the study support the fact that institutions and parent community can play significant role in improving the educational attainments of students. Among different categories, students from various scheduled tribes have reported to receive lesser support from their institutional set up. They also have less parental support for pursuing their studies due to varied reasons viz. poor economic background, lack of access to institutions, absence of awareness among parents regarding the importance of education and lack of immediate revenue to support their family.
