Abstract

A briefing document on the controversial Jonglei Canal project to increase water supply to Egypt and the Sudan by diverting some of the Nile River around the Sudd swamps where much was lost to evaporation. The briefing was prepared just as the project was about to start in 1978. It was prepared for EarthScan, which was originally an environmental information unit established by the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) for the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
