Abstract
August 29, 2005. Hurricane Katrina made landfall and caused catastrophic damage along the coastlines of Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana killing at least 1,836 people [12]. Nearly 80 percent of the city of New Orleans and surrounding areas were ravaged. Katrina is estimated to be responsible for more than $80 billion in damages, making it the costliest hurricane in the U.S. history [12]. Katrina had a major impact on health care in the affected and surrounding areas. Thousands of evacuees, including many who had chronic conditions, needed immediate medical care.
