Abstract

Since February 2021, EU trade policy has officially been guided by the concept of "open strategic autonomy". The EU thus declares both its willingness to continue to cooperate with third parties on trade issues and its will to consistently defend its own trade interests against the outside world. As it turns out, the EU today has the necessary legal basis to independently enforce both trade and trade-related interests through trade sanctions against third countries if necessary.
