Abstract

This article discusses the causes of urban sprawl in the United States and examines sustainable development issues related to the impact and costs of sprawl on everyday life the United States. The article particularly focuses on how local zoning and growth management programs are a significant cause of regional sprawl in the United States and examines what can be done through urban planning about the problems of sprawl. The article discusses why Smart Growth and New Urbanist development may actually be working to produce more regional sprawl in this country.
