I'm currently working on an analysis of the need to modernize the Endangered Species Act's definition of "species." With defaunation and extinction rates accelerating due to climate change, human overpopulation and habitat destruction, hybridization is increasing. Likewise, modern genetic analysis shows us that hybridization is much more prevalent than previously believed. Yet, the ESA uses an unscientific definition of "species" that leaves no protection for hybrids. In some cases, such as for the American Red Wolf (C. rufus), remnant populations of "hybrids" long thought lost have been recently discovered holding critical genetic diversity in their genomes which could benefit the captive breeding programs, yet they have no protections under the ESA.
