Neurosciences was born with Broca´s paper about Aphasia, localizing speech production at BA 44/45. Assignment of complex cognitive function to specific cortical areas became the most prominent theory in the design of experiments and interpretation of their results. fMRI studies greatly reinforced this approach, using naïve subtraction techniques to specifically demonstrate the primordial hole of specific brain areas as complex computational task solvers.
In contrast to this popular approach, many neuroscientists believe that brain functioning results from the orchestrated activity of a very large number of neural cells distributed all over the brain. In this approach, the brain is a Distributed Intelligent System (DIPS).
DIPS’ understanding requires knowledge from fields from many sciences areas other than Neurosciences. This is because it is not a popular theory in the area. Because of this, I am planning to post a series of working papers discussing DIPS.
