The Pale Veil: Decentering Whiteness as Power and Communication Norms in the Legal Profession
Literature is replete with works discussing whiteness as a construct, but few works have explored the white man’s voice on his own terms. This project is a qualitative account of how white, male lawyers (81% of the American legal profession) think and talk about diversity. It highlights behaviors that maintain the white males’ experiences as the normal reference point, making them blind to their own centering of whiteness. It also challenges white male essentialism and pushes readers to reimagine the relationship between whiteness and power. Ultimately, the goal is to shift the white male's gaze and equip him as an agent of change toward equality and inclusion.
