Ideas:“ I finished my sabbatical in December 2018, returning to campus refreshed. I worked on a variety of immigration detention topics, including family detention at the Karnes Family Detention Center in Texas, which I and my students visited for my third time in July/Aug 2018. I spoke at the ACLU South Florida's Lawyer's Conference about that experience in September. In 2019, my article, Teaching Forced Migration through Experiential Learning, was published in our Inter-Cultural Human Rights Law Review. I finished a paper on the Broward Transitional Center, which reported on our court watching project with the Southern Poverty Law Center. Over the 2017-2018 academic year, my students observed close to 300 hearings, entering what they saw into a database. I synthesized the data and drafted the report, co-authoring it with three of my students. I am taking another team of students to the Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, Georgia this August to work alongside SPLC. ”
